Homemade Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Is there anything more comforting than Italian food? I just love meatballs, especially when combined with a beautiful tomato sauce & pasta. Its a cosy classic, perfect for a weekend dinner.

Ingredients for the meatballs:

500gr minced beef

500gr minced pork

1 onion, finely chopped

1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tbsp basil

1 tbsp oregano

2 eggs

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper


Ingredients for the sauce:

4 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

700ml tomato sauce

400ml water

4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped

1 tbsp basil

1 tbsp oregano

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

S&P

200gr mushrooms, finely sliced

Fresh basil

Grated Parmesan


Instructions:

Heat oven to 200c.

In a bowl, combine all meatball ingredients.

Using your hands, mix thoroughly for 5 minutes.

Form 25 meatballs & place on an oven tray. Bake for 20 minutes, turning over midway.

For the sauce, simmer onion in olive oil for 3 minutes before adding tomato paste.

Fry off paste for 1 minute then add tomato sauce & water.

Add garlic, basil, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, S&P.

Simmer 20 minutes on medium low heat.

Add the meatballs & mushrooms to the sauce before simmering another 10 minutes. Add a few torn fresh basil leaves at the end.

Serve on a bed of spaghetti & top with grated Parmesan.
